A Guide to Vibrational Healing

Modalities & Local Resources

Vibrational healing, although what many might consider “new-age”, is actually thousands of years old and can mean different things, depending on the application. It is used to describe the effect of modalities that use the living energy inside something as a vehicle for healing, whether it is plants, crystals, our bodies or other resources. The term also encompasses energy-producing technologies, such as sound, PEMF, Bemer or frequency specific microcurrents. These tools may complement conventional treatments and approaches, or can be used as a standalone option after consulting qualified practitioners.

Natural Awakenings has put together a brief resource guide to multiple complementary modalities that can help alleviate or even eliminate pain, pathologies, inflammation and more through the use of vibration. This resource guide offers more than a dozen modalities; it includes basic contact information for practitioners and centers all over Fairfield and Southern Litchfield Counties. This list is a good place to start for someone seeking relief, but it is not exhaustive. We included the businesses and practitioners best known to Natural Awakenings and those who support our work: our advertisers and distributors. If your favorites are not listed, please show them this guide and ask them to consider getting involved with Natural Awakenings so more readers can find out what they have to offer.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine healing technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself. It is based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi) is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of meridians. To correct imbalances, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life-force. Since the goal of acupuncture is to restore energy balance, it can benefit general well-being as well as a wide range of conditions.

Many clinical studies have shown that acupuncture has effectively helped painful conditions such as joint or spinal pain, rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, sprains, and side effects of cancer treatments, among many other issues and diseases

Applied Kinesiology

Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to identify decreased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. Some tests use acupuncture meridians and others analyze interrelationships among muscles, organs, the brain and the body’s energy field. Applied kinesiology is also used to check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered. This study of muscles and their movement is often a useful tool for chiropractors and other practitioners when evaluating an individual’s response to a particular treatment.

Aromatherapy/Essential Oils

An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety as well as a wide range of other ailments and painful conditions. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to a water bath. The oils are often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology, chiropractic or other holistic treatments.

Research has shown that, in most cases, aromatherapy can be a safe, cost-effective addition to pain management measures. It can decrease cortisol levels, lower heart rate and reduce inflammation. With anxiety and energy depletion being a part of chronic pain sufferer’s lives, anxiety reduction and vitality rejuvenation have also been shown to be benefits with using aromatherapy. Since essential oils are made from plants, be aware of any allergic reactions, including headaches, skin rashes or wheezing.

Biofeedback/Neurofeedback

Biofeedback, also known as neurofeedback, is a relaxation technique that monitors internal body states; it is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension) with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving and relaxing, they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored.

For more information about Neurofeedback, see article on page 34.

Biontology

Every cell in the body emits more than 100,000 light impulses per second; these light emissions-emitted by all living things-are biophotons. Studies have shown these to be the steering mechanism behind all biochemical reactions; every biochemical reaction is preceded by an electromagnetic signal. Traditionally, conventional medicine has focused on the biochemical reactions between proteins, DNA and other molecules within cells, but without the biophoton signals, there would be no chemical reactions.

Healthy cells, sick cells, tumor cells, and infectious viruses and bacteria all have different light frequencies. Biophotons form either a pattern of coherence, where individual light frequencies complement each other—such as laser light or health—or a disordered mass, such as disease. When biophotons are made available to the body using the Chiren biontology instrument or other light frequency technologies, the body uses only what it needs to neutralize chaotic signals, thus moving toward restoration of health.

Biontology is a relatively young field of study: the full range of applications is still being explored. Universities are conducting research on the effect of the biontology instruments on health as well as other applications, such as agriculture.

Color Therapy

Color therapists study and apply how the vibrations of color waves can directly affect body cells and organs. With this understanding, different hues can treat illness and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. Many practitioners also claim that the body emits an aura—or energy field—with colors reflecting a person’s state of health. Color therapists apply colored lights or apply color mentally, through intention, to restore the body’s physical and psychic health. Colorpuncture combines the insights of light physics with the knowledge of the meridian points emphasized in Chinese medicine. The noninvasive technique is used to clear blockages in the meridians and restore healthy energy flow. Kirlian photographs track improvements. Another related sensory healing technique is light therapy, which attempts to restore well-being and can be successful in treating the depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is the art and science of applying touch and light pressure to the bones, tissues and fluids of the head, spine and sacrum. This allows restoration of the blood, lymph and cerebrospinal fluid, helping the body heal itself from injury and disease. Benefits include pain relief, better sleep, improved sense of well-being, relaxation and mental clarity.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST)

A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism, including the brain, spinal cord, bones of the skull, sacrum and interconnected membranes. Functioning on both a physical and energetic level, CST is often used to treat chronic pain, migraines, TMJ, eye and ear problems, and other issues but can be useful for anyone even without a specific condition to treat.

Crystal/Gemstone Therapy

Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. Crystals also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of “laying-on of stones”, practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow.

Energy Healing Modalities

Reiki • Reconnective Healing • 13th Octave LaHoChi • Pranic Healing Access Consciousness • Quantum Touch • IET • Jin Shin Jyutsu and others

While they are based on different teachings and employ diverse protocols, each of the energy healing modalities is a method of increasing, activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi) of an individual. Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies with healing intent or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). These various techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems, and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. These modalities can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others.

Due to the multi-layered complexity of these healing practices, there is a debate as to how best to study them. Conducting the conventional randomized controlled trials has presented a challenge for researchers given the current technological inability to consistently document changes in the biofield. That said, patients in a number of studies with Reiki, the best known of these techniques, indicated that the modality reduced anxiety and pain, while improving relaxation, fatigue, depression and overall well-being. Because of this research, Reiki is now widely used in institutional settings such as hospitals and cancer centers. Other hands-on energy modalities may not be as well-researched, but could be expected to have similar effects as they are based on similar principles.

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)

Our bodies produce their own current within each cell. With frequency specific microcurrent (FSM), a practitioner uses a device that delivers a low-level electrical current (only one millionth of an ampere) to the body. Based on which tissues are involved, practitioners select certain frequencies to encourage self-healing in the body. The current is usually applied with a semi-wet towel or skin patches. Treatments can help reduce inflammation, repair tissue, reduce pain and more. It also aids in increasing protein synthesis, amino acid transport and endorphins.

FSM, when used in combination with other manual therapies, can help accelerate detoxification and regeneration processes. It can be beneficial for symptoms related to PTSD, shingles, kidney stones, injuries (sports-related, concussions), pain (back, neck, nerve, muscle), fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, asthma and more.

FSM treatment is not recommended for those who have pacemakers, implanted pumps or uncontrolled seizures. Pregnant women should also not receive treatment. Consult with the practitioner regarding acute infection, new scar tissue and acute fractures.

Homeopathy

A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy—taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar”, and pathos, meaning “suffering”—employs the concept that “like cures like.” A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing.

Although research is divided in terms of measuring the effectiveness of homeopathy, studies have shown that homeopathic treatment has helped improve disease severity and quality of life for the long-term care of patients with chronic diseases. Some studies have shown positive effects by homeopathy on conditions such as bronchitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatic diseases, allergies and vertigo, among others.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a general term for the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. It incorporates various disciplines and involves kneading, rubbing, brushing and tapping the muscles and connective tissues by hand or using mechanical devices. Its goal is to increase circulation and detoxification, in order to reduce physical and emotional stress and increase overall wellness.

A number of studies have shown that surgical patients who received massages reported reduced pain and anxiety both pre- and post-operation. Among cancer patients studied, the therapy reduced their pain, anxiety and fatigue. Massage therapy has also been shown to help with headaches, low back pain, circulation, joint pain and many other conditions.

Sound

A healing tool around the world for centuries, sound employs vocal and instrumental tones, generated internally or externally. When sounds are produced with healing intent, they create sympathetic resonance in the physical and energy bodies. Sound healing also is used to bring discordant energy into balance and harmony. Shamanic practitioners and sound healers employ a variety of instruments, including drums, flutes, whistles, bowls, gongs and others to stimulate the body’s own healing responses.

Vibrational Technology

Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) • BEMER • Vibrosaun • Scalar technology and other devices

PEMF is a non-contact, non-invasive, non-pharmacological technology used to stimulate cellular charge in order to repair at a cellular level. The PEMF therapy devices deliver natural pulsating electromagnetic fields to the body with the specific frequencies and intensities tailored to the person. Applicators include a full body mat, localized pad applicators and/or pinpointed probes. PEMF can recharge cells by increasing oxygenation, circulation, hydration and nutrient absorption as well as help with detoxification.

BEMER applications boost blood flow, improving cardiovascular function and enhancing the body’s regenerative abilities and mental acuity.

Vibrosaun technology consists of therapeutic dry sauna heat and a padded vibrating bed. This user-controlled machine can be used for detoxification, pain relief, weight loss and relaxation.

The technology can help with arthritis, neck and back pain, sciatica, sport injuries, post-operative healing, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Lyme disease, and other conditions. People who have pacemakers, are pregnant or are at risk for epileptic seizures should not use PEMF therapy.

Water

Water is a dynamic medium, constantly changing from liquid to solid to gas. Water movement in nature is typically an indicator of energy and purity. The most turbulent water contains a high amount of both oxygen and minerals and is highly energized.

Spring and rainwater are the most pure waters in terms of their molecular configuration because of the natural effects of wind, sun, lightning and the atmosphere itself. Water structuring units like that from Crystal Blue seek to mimic the natural actions of the environment to create healthier, more “natural” water. Structured water is a term for water in its natural state that has not been altered by modern human intervention, such as pipes, electromagnetic frequencies and toxins. Conventional methods for treating and transporting water often disrupt water’s natural life-enhancing properties, lessening its positive impact.

While the chemical composition of structured water is essentially the same as water from the well, it tastes and feels much different. Water can be highly charged, meaning it absorbs the energy of the thoughts, emotions and environment around it. Structuring units seek to cleanse or clear toxic “memory” from water, using a vortex motion to restore water to its more natural, health-promoting state.
