Girl Scout Update

In its largest overhaul in 30 years, the 94-year old institution of Girl Scouting is out to make its core values of confidence, courage, character, life skills and leadership relevant to today’s girls. True to their pledge to “help people at all times,” leaders want to address more of the issues girls ages 5 to 17 face in daily life.

So the entire curriculum is being rewritten to make room for topics such as overscheduling, cyberbullies, self-mutilation, teen pregnancy and ethical use of technology. And it recognizes that many harmful fads are rooted in age-old challenges like low self-esteem and peer pressure.

The update aims to reverse any perception that scouting is “uncool.” A muchneeded voice, the organization already reaches 10 percent of America’s schoolage girls, serving 3 million members through a million volunteers.
