Waldorf School Receives State, National Recognition

Newtown’s Housatonic Valley Waldorf School’s next Open House will be on Saturday, February 27. Serving children from birth to 8th grade, the school achieved full accreditation on both the state and national levels in December 2009, after completing a rigorous two-year process with the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools and the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America. Now in its 21st year, the school began in New Milford as a playgroup. By 1995, the initial grade school class opened as a combined 1st and 2nd grade. To date the school has graduated five eighth grade classes.

Accolades in the accreditation report include the following:
• Its exceptional commitment to and understanding of the Waldorf philosophy and pedagogy and the extraordinary delivery of Waldorf education
• Its deep understanding of child development and for recognizing and celebrating the social, emotional, intellectual and physical need of each child within the framework of an authentic Waldorf education
• A strong development of curriculum and teaching of various arts and a rich and complete music program
• A cohesive and committed staff, faculty, parent community and board dedicated to the children, families and the school
• Its model of collaborative leadership
• The development of a vibrant, dedicated and caring community of adults and children.

Patrick Cushing, Ph.D., president of the Board of Trustees, states: “Receiving accreditation from both CAIS and AWNSA is a wonderful achievement. It demonstrates formal recognition for the outstanding education provided by dedicated faculty and staff here at HVWS. Congratulations to all.”

The Waldorf movement is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing non-sectarian educational initiatives, with 900 schools worldwide.
