Westchester Showroom Opens for Basbag Handbags

Basbag, a handbag company promoting fair trade and sustainable design, is now offering its products to private and wholesale clients through a showroom at 37 Indian Hill Road, Katonah, New York.

“These beautifully crafted handbags are handmade in Mexico from recycled materials by artisans and women in jail,” says Basbag’s New York distributor, Leticia Gonzalez. “I fell in love with the colors, textures and especially the energy from these beautiful bags. Every time I wear one, people are naturally drawn to it.” Every Basbag piece is unique, she notes.

Basbag is based in Gonzalez’s hometown of Puebla, where there are two major car manufacturers. Operating under the Fair Trade certification, Basbag hires local artisans and women prisoners to craft handbags from the car manufacturers’ leftover leather and textiles. “I wish to help impoverished communities, and especially women,” Gonzalez says. Later this summer, the showroom will also offer handcrafted jewelry from Tibet and fine necklaces from Columbia.
