Swim Across America Marks 20 Years of Making Waves Against Cancer
Swim Across America will host the 20th annual Swim Across America–Fairfield County open water swim on June 20 at Dolphin Cove in Stamford. The milestone event welcomes swimmers of all ages and skill levels to raise funds for Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), the Stamford-based nonprofit dedicated exclusively to funding cancer cell and gene therapy research.
Participants may choose from a half-mile, 1.5-mile or 3-mile swim course, while children ages 11 and younger can enjoy a shoreline Kids’ Splash and family-friendly activities. A virtual “SAA My Way” option is also available for those unable to attend in person.
Since its founding in 2007, the Fairfield County swim has raised more than $8.2 million to support innovative cancer research and clinical trials targeting brain cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and other forms of the disease. More than 250 swimmers and hundreds of volunteers, spectators and supporters are expected to participate this year.
The event will also recognize longtime swimmers, volunteers and community leaders whose dedication has helped sustain the swim for two decades. Featured researcher Joseph Fraietta, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania, whose work focuses on ovarian cancer treatments, will attend alongside cancer survivor Laurie Adami, whose life-saving CAR T-cell therapy was supported through early ACGT-funded research.
