Today’s marshmallows are made with corn syrup, cornstarch, dextrose, and artificial flavorings. But, marshmallows are one of the oldest desserts with accounts of ancient Egyptians making candies of marsh mallow root and honey. These delicacies were reserved for the gods and royalty.
The high mucilaginous content of marsh mallow root makes it a useful remedy for treating coughs and colds, and its antibacterial activity makes it effective in wound healing. In the past, it was called “mortification root” because of its ability to prevent gangrene.
