Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust is excited to host renowned horticulturalist and TED Talk Presenter, Rebecca McMackin, for an inspiring talk “Adventures in Ecological Horticulture” at noon on Sunday, May 4, at the Flanders Sugar House, located at 48 Church Hill Road in Woodbury.

McMackin is a renowned horticulturist and garden designer who writes, lectures and teaches ecological landscape management and pollination ecology. She is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society and an Associate with the Harvard Divinity School’s Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative. She has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City.

As former Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches. She has been published by and featured in the New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, on NPR and PBS. Her garden for the Brooklyn Museum recently won the PPA’s Award of Excellence and her TED Talk has been viewed over a million times.

Flanders is a nonprofit organization that focuses on environmental education and the acquisition, conservation, and stewardship of open space. Through its land trust initiatives, Flanders actively works to protect important natural sites and the area’s landscape character and quality of life.
