Seeking Out Trauma-Informed Yoga

Anneke Lucas

Anneke Lucas, founder of Liberation Prison Yoga, is presenting Creating a Safe Space with Anneke Lucas through The Yoga Teachers Association (YTA). The workshop will take place on September 10 from 1:30-4:30pm at the Yoga Studio at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor, New York. It will be followed by YTA’s annual Prana Party at 4:30pm in the Club Fit lounge. This is an opportunity for members to connect and share ideas. Anneke Lucas will also be available for questions.

Repressed emotions connected to all kinds of trauma can cause imbalances in the body-mind system that may manifest as uncontrollable anger, chronic low self-esteem or physical illness. This workshop will focus on creating a safe space that allows students to break through enduring shame and connect to the self with compassion and acceptance. Participants will explore the elements of Trauma Yoga and be guided through a trauma-informed practice.

Lucas, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and trafficking, found healing through yoga. She now teaches trauma-informed yoga at prisons, including Rikers Island and Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, and to traumatized populations all over the world.

Yoga Teachers Association provides affordable continuing education opportunities to the yoga community in the lower Hudson Valley. Workshops are led by national and local instructors and are open to members and nonmembers. Upcoming workshops include Handcrafted Yoga with Al Bingham on October 8, Chakras and Healing with Himalayan Institute’s Shari Friedrichsen on November 12, and Yin/Vinyasa: Harnessing the Power of Stillness to Maximize Your Inherent Mobility with Corina Benner on December 10.
